"Grace is a series of photographs created by Scott Offen over the past four years of his wife, Grace. The impetus of this body of work has been the attempt to better understand one person through close observation. What makes this possible is the confidence that comes from long association, in their case, thirty nine years. Intimacy and trust are roads both travel. Each partner is vulnerable behind and in front of the camera. Each portrait reveals not only the sitter’s and the maker’s intent, but also uncontrolled moments of self disclosure. They work together. They ask questions about emotions, relationships, and their visual depiction. The images explore solitude, the difficulty of knowing another or oneself, love for a partner of many years, aging, and the mystery of these things. Together, they are always focused on making beautiful images.”

Scott Offen was born in Boston, Massachusetts in 1960. He is currently pursuing an MFA in Photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. His work has been shown most recently at Aviary Gallery in Jamaica Plain, Massachusetts and at the Griffin Museum of Photography in Winchester, Massachusetts where he has work in their collection.

// Pa’ Tras Ni Pa’ Coger Impulso //

"Pa’ Tras Ni Pa’ Coger Impulso is a series of photographs that depict the resilience and perseverance of Boricua karatekas, practitioners of karate, from Juncos and Ponce Puerto Rico. Pa’ tras ni pa’ coger impulso is a common Puerto Rican saying that roughly translates to keep going and never look back. The pictures are fragments of a community that encourages students of all ages to be strong, perseverant, and humble. Despite undergoing the scrutiny of American media that portrays the Latinx community as bandidos and bad hombres, our community is caring, fearless and resilient. The photographs show an empowered and dynamic view of Boricuas exemplifying the phrase “pa’ tras ni pa’ coger impulso.”

Carolina Lizet is a Colombian-American photographer who focuses on representing the Latinx community in modern society. With a BFA in photography from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, Carolina uses photography as a tool to dismantle stereotypes placed on the Latinx community by highlighting the beauty and strength of its people. In 2019, she received the Gertrude Kasebier traveling grant giving her the opportunity to travel to Puerto Rico with the goal of capturing the resilience of Boricuas via the martial arts community in Juncos and Ponce.

Aviary Gallery is pleased to present Knotweed, a group exhibition of images and texts curated by Dylan Hausthor.

“The underbelly of a post-fact world seems to be the simultaneous beauty and danger of fiction. The inherent exploitation in perspective is one that marks yet another transitional period in veritas art making. Knotweed is an effort to explore the complicated and wrought world of fiction-based narratives through traditionally journalistic mediums.

The work in Knotweed is disparate and woven. Each collection of images from each artist tells a specific story—a subjective and warped field recording of something true. The original iteration of this project was generously supported by the Ellis-Beauregard Foundation.”

Parallax // November 2019

Aviary Gallery is pleased to present Parallax, an exhibition of photographs by Matthew Monteith, in November 2019.

In 2001/02, Matthew Monteith made a body of work titled Czech Eden with the assistance of a Fulbright Fellowship, and the subsequent work was published by Aperture as a monograph in 2006. This past year, he received a second Fulbright to revisit the Czech Republic and the locations and people that he photographed there during his first grant period.

This exhibition consists of photographs of the same subjects made 17 years apart exploring the passage of time and its effect on people and places. The pictures work to create a parallax view that allows the viewer to meditate on both time’s impact on the physical world as well as the shift in the photographer’s intentions and desires. The photographs emphasize the idea of memories considered in the present using various reference points asking the viewer to perceive time and space in the way the parallax method uses two slightly different views to estimate distance in photography and human vision.

Matthew Monteith studied at the International Center of Photography before earning an MFA from the Yale School of Art in 2004. He was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic from 2001-2002, and the resulting work was published as Czech Eden by Aperture in 2006. He was a resident at the Marie Walsh Sharpe Foundation in New York City in 2004-05 and received the Abigail Cohen Rome Prize in Photography from the American Academy in Rome in 2008. In 2015, he received a Pollock Krasner fellowship for his ongoing project The Explainers. His first show at Aviary, The Graduates, was also in 2015. His editorial work has appeared in numerous publications, and his clients include Diller Scofidio + Renfro, Harvard Art Museums, The Deste Foundation, Microsoft, and many others. His work has been exhibited in solo exhibitions in New York, San Francisco, Austin, Kyoto, Paris, Arles, and Cherbourg as well as in group exhibitions in New York, Charlotte, Miami, Washington D.C., Rennes, Ljubljana, Pula, Prague, Rome, and elsewhere. He is an Associate Professor of Photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in Boston.

It's Not Time For That // September 2019

New Works by Rosie Ranauro

Opening Reception // September 5, 2019, 6-9pm

It's Not Time For That explores the endeavor to inhabit the body in the present moment. In these works, the figure wraps and unwraps as parts of the whole come together and release in a conversation with one another. The artist uses a personal language of symbols and repeated motifs to explore the tension and balance inherent in this process - the figures are joyful and sorrowful, protective and open, at rest and in movement. Ranauro often leverages humor as an access point for the viewer to engage and converse with the works.

This evolving body of work is a gentle call from the self, to the self, to say "Don't go away, stay here, you're here right now in your body. It's not time for that.”

Rosie Ranauro is an interdisciplinary artist whose work explores how pain informs the self. Her works are created during exploratory cycles of performance and painting, making use of touch and play to access embodiment.

Ranauro holds a BFA in Painting from Massachusetts College of Art and Design and lives and works in Boston, MA. She has shown locally and internationally, most recently as an Artist in Residence at The Ou-telier in Duncan, British Colombia.

Aviary Gallery is pleased to present Due West, a photographic exhibition by Alexa Cushing, at our location 48 South St. Jamaica Plain MA, 02130.

For generations, countless photographers have traveled westward to take part in a voyage symbolic of a better life and a fresh start. Lured by the opportunity of the Golden State in a way that is almost as biblical as the promised land, the promises of Los Angeles can appear virtually mythical.

This work was funded by the first annual Gertrude Kasebier Grant, the generous gift of an anonymous MassArt Photography program supporter. With the assistance of this award, Alexa Cushing was able to participate in the photographic tradition of heading west to California. Due West joins a conversation that has been ongoing between photographers throughout history, representing the bright and sprawling Los Angeles as a city existing as an unlikely combination of glamour and fracture.

Aviary Gallery is pleased to present Dust Collective: Handmade Photography Books, a group exhibition at our location, 48 South St. Jamaica Plain, MA 02130.

The handmade photography books in this show focus on new approaches to traditional methods of photography and bookmaking. The photographic work within the books highlight themes of time, weather, nature, space, and the history of photography. The books are available in small, limited editions, and are skillfully crafted by each artist by hand. Each book will be complimented by an installation of the artist’s photographic work on the wall. Dust Collective is a handmade photography book publisher and distributor, managed by Emily Sheffer. It was founded in 2017, and is based in Cambridge, MA.

The exhibited images analyze the constant contention within the powerfully brutal, magical season of winter. While many choose to wish these months away, the artists of Cold Season remain present- be it in their misery, or their wonder, and continue to create within it. The 28 photographers featured delve into how we experience this annual transformation on a traditional, poetic, and personal level.

Aviary Gallery is pleased to present Provenance, a group exhibition at our location, 48 South St. Jamaica Plain, MA, featuring the work of Meghan Braney, Rafael Concepcion, Alexa Cushing, Juliet Degree, Amy Fink, Ross Kiah, Julia Kokernak, Maxwell Labelle, Alyssa McDonald, Evan Perkins, Kiera Renz, Joseph Ritchie, and Bountheng Tanakhone. The works in this exhibition span a variety of photographic processes, seen in both the use of a variety cameras and post production processes. Prints shown include archival inkjet prints and analogue silver gelatin prints.

By definition, provenance is defined as, “the place of origin or earliest known history of something”. The practice of deriving a provenance is particularly valuable in authenticating a historical object, and has therefore been a longstanding tradition in the world of art, antiquities, archaeology, and science. Likewise, the photographic work of these 13 artists explores the taxonomy of what precedes us, and these tracings back to an origin: be it the personal, historical, or metaphorical.

Calling to the world of antiquities for this exhibition’s title draws attention to the parallel abilities photography possesses to document, facilitate, and challenge a fixation on ownership and lineage. Provenance is an exhibition that delves into various artist’s diverse practices to emphasize the inclination to focus on our fervent tendencies to archive, to reflect, and to seek a past in order to validate its future.

Unknown Results is a collection of works by artists and musicians curated by Kevin Micka and Morgan Evans-Weiler. All works included contain an element of perceivable order or structure within that may otherwise present themselves as random or abstract architecture - they capture the intent of an artist to produce a result beyond their control. In addition to taking on a curatorial role, Kevin Micka (of Animal Hospital Ensemble, https://vimeo.com/109847153) will be installing multiple interactive electromechanical works. Building off of Kevin’s (ensemble and solo) work and inspired by the harpsichord, these pieces produce different notes in unpredictable intervals of time to create momentary patterns and fleeting melodies.

Accompanying this exhibition will be a series of events including performances by local musicians (including Forbes Graham & Rick Maguire of Pile).

Works by Sage Schmett & Alex Marantz

SAGE SCHMETT is an artist working mostly with cardboard, magazines, catalogues, and other forms of recycled paper. She uses collage and sculptural strategies to explore mess and clutter, and the ways in which they define our private spaces. Sage earned a BFA in Fiber Arts from MassArt in 2012, and regularly shows her sculpture and fiber work around the Boston area. She collaborates with local musicians, and contributed drawings to the 2016 rock documentary Danny Says. Sage lives and works in Allston, MA.

ARTIST STATEMENT My work centers around exploring collections of things: I’m interested in how we accumulate memories, dreams, loss, and desire in the form of mess and clutter. I think of my practice as a vehicle for exploring how our possessions reflect us and define our private spaces. My most recent sculptures have been dollhouses with dream-like interiors made of recycled materials, like cardboard and magazines.

Houses in particular have captured my focus because by virtue of containing our stuff, they act as repositories for imprints of personal experience. My approach to building them actually goes back to making shoebox dioramas as a kid, creating little rooms with miniature collaged objects in them.

The process of browsing catalogues and magazines for images feels like a shopping spree, and the act of accumulating all these cut-out items I’m naturally drawn to is oddly thrilling. Cutting out and mounting these images on cardboard transforms them into a new type of object by giving them another physical dimension, and collecting them feels analogous to owning the actual things that the images represent. There is a deeply repetitive aspect to this process—cutting and gluing over long spans of time, and arranging lots of tiny objects into elaborate piles of debris—that gives me a meditative sense of catharsis.

The body of work I’ve created is meant to encourage close attention, and invite immersion in the layers of details. Building intimate spaces that play with our visual associations is a way for me to control a small slice of complexity, against the backdrop of a chaotic and overstimulating society.

With an uninhibited painting style, ALEX MARANTZ incorporates a bright palette into deliberate yet free-flowing patterns. Alex is a UX designer and musician who started painting with acrylics two years ago. His inspirations include comfort food, running, and international music.

ARTIST STATEMENT I’m inspired by carefree sensibilities. I don’t really have the ability to feel this way in my day to day world. So to be able to free myself while painting is a huge relief and a good balance to my life. It’s my therapy tool and allows me to stay sane. My process is very much organic. I start with a color and a canvas, preferably larger in size. I let my hand move freely, create shapes and build some sort of foundation. I move fast and try not to change course. Painting to me is meditative and I’d like to avoid putting pressure on outcomes. This is my process today, but I’m always open to change and growing as an artist.

LEARNING HOW TO CRY WHILE DRIVING UP GHOST MOUNTAIN presents narratives of spirits in subtle interaction with one another and a woman in a car. This series of paintings is driven by trying to let go of a loved one in the present while dealing with the metaphoric ghosts of the past. 

Duennebier works in painting, drawing, sculpture, and animation where she creates surreal narratives populated with oddball characters. Her crude and illustrative manner mingles scenes of menace and sly humor. These worksshow every day life tainted by disappointment, violence, and body image. Tableaux are populated with bemused men, fierce-looking women, and strange half-breed creatures. Her characters maintain an air of humor and innocence while speaking to feminism, death, and story telling.

Caitlin Duennebier was born in Connecticut, USA in 1987. She received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography at Massachusetts College of Art & Design, USA in 2009 and studied on scholarship at London University of the Arts. Duennebier lived in London between 2009-2014 where OH PAPA was created as an illustrative platform for her work. She currently lives and works in Watertown, MA USA.

Natural Reaction is a collection of tactile works that have been created in response to the participating artists’ experiences with the natural world. Through color, texture, and form, each piece explores various mediums and processes. This body of work, made up of fiber and sculptural elements, explores our relationships to nature as well as interpersonal interaction. In utilizing a variety of materials, each piece displays the artist's natural reaction to the material and process that connects them to their practice. The diversity in the works selected allows the viewer a constantly evolving experience while exploring the ways in which these pieces relate to and stand apart from one another.

Cut paper works by Mary Goldthwaite-Gagne

Artist Statement:
Guided By (Female) Voices is a kind of self-portrait and acknowledgement of the women I most admire. This body of work began late in 2016 when I was feeling completely inundated with the constant onslaught of negativity that was being directed towards women. I started making cut paper portraits of creative women that I admire: Nancy Spero, Yoko Ono, Zadie Smith, Alma Thomas, The Guerilla Girls. I took 9 of these portraits and made an edition of 50 posters to sell at Broke:The Affordable Arts Fair, which I have been organizing since early 2008. I sold all 50 posters in a day and donated $500 to Planned Parenthood. At the end of the day, something that I made helped me to make a positive action that I could not have otherwise. I have spent 2017 dedicated to making portraits of women whom I admire, and the women who have helped to make me who I am today. As the project has worn on, I have expanded beyond looking solely at the famous artists and writers, and have focused more on celebrating the people in my life who embody qualities that I admire and inspire me.

“Displaced” (co-curated by Noah Grigni and Aviary Gallery) features works by Boston area artists who have experienced and responded to displacement, dysphoria, dysmorphia, or erasure in various ways. Drawing from a range of identities and experiences, this intentionally varied body of work touches on themes of cultural identity, marginalization, isolation, physical trauma, gender dysphoria, mental health, and the relationship to the self. As artists, we create work as a means to process personal experiences, navigate and confront systems of power, and uplift our communities. “Displaced” includes work spanning a range of media, including painting, printmaking, collage, and digital illustration. 

Some artists have chosen to donate a portion of the profits from their art sales to relief efforts in Puerto Rico, where hurricane Maria and its aftermath has displaced over 70,000 American citizens - much of the island remains without power more than two months after the storm.

Praise for "Displaced" from Dig Boston

Historically speaking, cities use artists as the spear point for pushing poor (and generally POC) folks out of neighborhoods to make way for development and the corollary rise in tax revenue and drop in education and public program spending. Obvious examples of this can be seen in Detroit, San Francisco, Lower Manhattan, Washington D.C.; and in Boston the South End, Fenway, and now JP. All of these places are full of people with lots of money, living in formerly condemned buildings rehabbed by artists, and whose children go to school outside of the public school system. That means lots more tax revenue to spend, and fewer public programming to spend it on.

As artists get pushed further into the periphery, we must be cognizant of the fact that our expulsion from a neighborhood directly leads to the expulsion of others from the next trendy area. Ignoring the blatant political culture that enables the commodification and exploitation of the arts for their "cool" factor is dangerous, in effect standing down to allow the rest of the neighborhood to pick this fight for themselves, which they will ultimately lose. We would like to make clear that we are concerned for our art practices, but even more so about the larger implications of displacing the existing people and communities within the places we live and work.

The pieces on these walls are by artists who have been or are about to be pushed from their workspaces to make way for new luxury residences. We want to be loud about what is happening, and try our best to support all people who are currently displaced from their homes or in the process of eviction from their neighborhoods and communities.

Space Amid is a an exhibition curated by Rafael Concepcion that includes a collection of works by Caiti Borruso, Jamezie Helenski, Amiko Li, and Margot Keil. This exhibition deals with the eccentricities and idiosyncrasies of a place, and how the smallest details and imperfections of a landscape are often its most defining characteristics. They help us differentiate whether or not a place is home, or if it is a place we should not go, among a vast variety of other functions. These frequently mundane characteristics of a location are the basis for our notions of belonging and nostalgia for that landscape that we experience in our day-to-day lives.

Works by Sarah Trahan

Between 1867 and 1872 the photographer Timothy H. O'Sullivan joined the Geographical Exploration of the Fortieth Parallel lead by the geologist Clarence King. With the survey traveling close to the northern fortieth parallel, O'Sullivan photographed throughout the territories that would become the present states of California, Nevada, Idaho, Wyoming, Colorado and Utah. Later surveys took him on geography explorations through the southwest, through the current states of Arizona and New Mexico. Taking images of the primarily desert landscape and its strange features, O'Sullivan was tasked with a subject matter with little precedent at the time. The comprehensibility of the land's scale and character were left to O'Sullivan's imagination and improvisation with the camera.

During the summer of 2015 and 2016 I set off on two two-week road trips retracing the survey's route. Gone are the frontiersmen, or, the men who claimed these places for their own and gave them their new names. In the Western States there are few feats of strength left to prove, and without the bravado of discovery we are left with the menial tasks of superficial preservation and mouth agape marveling. What are men then when there’s no masculinity to prove? In the shadow of our forbearers, what do we do when to “reimagine” means to settle for second place? These are landscapes of an identity crisis.

"By blurring dialogues of cartoon imagery, everyday mundane occurrences, cataclysmic cosmic events, fine art tropes both low and high, and personal history I aim to create an environment of endless inquiry, a sublimation of personal totems, an open ended discussion on social infrastructure. A non-allegorical narrative supported by empty symbols and anonymous antagonists."

Evan  Gilbert was born 1993 in Miami Florida. As an adolescent he became entranced with subcultural ephemera ranging from the 1960s counter culture of Rcrumb comics, Timothy Leary and R.D. Lang Books to Captain Beefheart and GONG records. Later in his teenage years he became fascinated with the imagery of 1970s-1980s horror films and the hardcore punk movement, all of which had a critical influence on his visual lexicon and personal philosophies. He received a BFA in 2015 from The School of the Museum of Fine arts in Boston Massachusetts with a focus in painting and drawing. With the use of dark absurdist humor and loose non-allegorical narrative he depicts bizarre worlds displaying the confusion and subjugation of the material world and its occasional moments of autonomy . Heavily influenced by artists such as Oyvand Fahlstrom, Mike Kelley and Paul Thek his work ranges from abstraction and illustrative work to sculpture and installation. Creating from the detritus of both physical materials and personal semiotics he explores humanity's ability to find meaning in the meaningless.

PARTS UNKNOWN is a group art show celebrating the symbolic, signaling, informative, heraldic and communicative nature of flags. Organized by Trifecta Editions and Brian Butler and hosted at Aviary in Jamaica Plain, MA from October – November 2016.

Mirror Stage

New works by Molly McIntyre

Opening Reception: Thursday, August 4th from 6-8pm

These new cut-outs reflect on the nature of friendships, in particular those friendships from which we seek affirmation of our own identities. The mirror stage, as defined by Jacques Lacan, is literally the stage when a baby first recognizes themself in the mirror, but it also extends throughout our lives. Lacan says that the mirror stage creates a duality because the whole-ness of the image in the mirror is in opposition to the fragmentary nature of the self. This creates the ego and alienates the subject from the self.  Many of us became noticeably alienated from ourselves as teenagers when our bodies betrayed us by changing without our permission and we were suddenly asked to identify as a new self. I am interested in the ways that friends become our mirrors, inviting us back to a reality where we feel comfortable in our skins. As friends, we repeatedly affirm each other's presentation choices, either verbally or by echoing them in our own choices. Of course, this has the danger to become oppressive conformity. But with a close friend, who you know in all their messy fragmented selfhood, it's like you're both in on the joke of "wholeness" and it is a delight to present that face to each other and to the world, together. 

In these pieces, the cut paper images are static and whole, while the shadows behind them form more fragmented and changeable images. As the light changes, they may be temporarily aligned, as in what Lacan called a "moment of jubilation" when self and subject are of a piece, but they can never truly be united. The cut-out is always in a fixed state of wholeness that the shadow can never achieve, and together they form something more interesting than either one on its own.

Bio

Molly McIntyre is an artist and illustrator who tries to understand people. Her cut paper work, animations, and drawings all explore this process of searching, finding - and sometimes not finding - what makes people who they are. 

Molly lives and works in Brooklyn, NY, where she enjoys wandering the streets observing urban American humanity with fellow artist and husband, Brian DeRosia. She earned her BFA in printmaking and book arts from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia, PA, and her MFA from the Maine College of Art.

"Sky’s Edge"

The interdisciplinary works of Atkinson and Baird are located within the instability and flux of light, space and perception. Sky’s Edge is a collection of works that fall as much with in the language photography as they do in opposition to it. Moving between the internal and the external they do not locate light, but instead explore its possibility as space, color and time. Both Baird and Atkinson’s work is slippery, at times appearing to be illusion and at others representation, never quite willing to be resolved. Playing not only with the way color and form shift between dimensions in physical space, but also within each individual’s mind. How we each understand what is presented to us is deeply unstable, we have agency over what we see, and ultimately your red is not the same as mine.

Currently in bi coastal practices, Atkinson and Baird met while attending The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. The maintain their own practices, while also working collaboratively.

Christine Atkinson (b. 1986, Stockton, CA)
Christine Atkinson received her undergraduate degree from the Brooks Institute of Photography in Santa Barbara California and her MFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2013. Atkinson was born and raised in Northern California. She lives and works in Los Angeles. Her works have been included in various shows across the United States.

“Hinterland explores concepts related to deep-­time, extraterrestrial contact, and the unknown through an installation of photographic and cast-­plaster sculptural works.”

Josh intends to play with space and time by altering pieces orientation and position within the gallery space to reveal new meanings and incite investigation.

Josh Poehlein is a visual artist who received his BFA in Photography from Rochester Institute of Technology in 2007 and later earned an MFA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago in 2013. Since he is currently working as an instructor at the Photographic Center Northwest in his home city Seattle, Washington. Josh is also the founder and curator of the SAD Gallery, a garage gallery in Seattle. He’s been shown at galleries such as FotoMuseum in Antwerp, Belgium and Les Rencontres D’Arles Photographie in Arles, France.

Flash Forward Incubator Program is apart of the Flash Forward Festival created by the Magenta Foundation which spans the Boston, Calgary and Toronto areas. This year Aviary Gallery had the honor of hosting the Boston area reception and silent auction. The Flash Forward Incubator Program is dedicated to supporting high school students interested in photography and art. The program prepares students to go from the high school setting and into the rest of the creative artistic lives. This year’s theme was ‘The Constructed Image’ and encouraged students to play with technology to manipulate or invent their subject matter. All participants were given copies of the 2016 Incubator Program catalogue and all proceeds from the silent auction were put back into scholarships to be awarded to participating students.

In 2012-13, these 300+ portraits were created by using a sewing machine, crinoline fabric, black thread, paper, and marker. The challenge was making one per day for the length of a year. The process meant getting to know someone each morning. They were chosen as a subject, studied throughout the afternoon, and in the late evening, realized in thread. Now, almost four years from the start of this project, all of the individuals in these stitched portraits are being shown together… They are actors, directors, musicians, artists, politicians, peace prize winners, civil rights leaders, outsiders, insiders, writers, scientists, athletes, …and one of them plays cricket.

BIO:

Ricky Katowicz is a toy designer and visual performance artist who uses the sewing machine to create drawings and soundscapes. In addition, he leads workshops to teach people of all ages how to make nothing out of something. He lives in Rhode Island with his wife, daughter, and two birds. His work can be seen at his personal blog, in the Todd Oldham board book - Sundance Film Festival A-Z, and on toy shelves around the world. 

He has shown and performed at Aviary Gallery, Craftland, Machines With Magnets, Aurora Providence, RISD Museum, and Sundance Film Festival.

Aviary Gallery is excited to present Allison Beonde’s exhibition of thrilling photographs ‘1947, Roswell’. Allison explores famous UFO sighting of 1947 and the fictionalized and historic moments passed down with it. In working on this series, Allison is captivated by the way the key witness morphs his testimony throughout his life. There is something odd about how an image can function in several ways - purely photographic, a piece of evidence, a physical object or a falsification. ‘1947, Roswell’ is an examination of the story as an open-ended, unresolved, strangely beautiful, and at times perceived as largely fiction.

Allison Beonde is a visual artists living in Central New York. She received her BFA from the Museum School of Fine Arts, Boston, MA. She has been exhibited throughout Boston and is the recipient of a 2015 Traveling Fellowship through the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, as well as a 2015 Light Work Grant.

‘E7900’ is a collaborative show featuring a selection of artists who have donated images to our gallery to raise funds for a new large format printer. We have greatly missed our old Epson 7900 and we are grateful for the donated artworks we have received.

The foundation of the exhibition is technology; our dependence on it, our interpretation of it and new methods of using contemporary technology for art making. The collection of work donated to us ranges from malfunctions, light phenomenons, photoshop manipulation and collage to cellphone pictures and images of technology itself. In modern society we have invested ourselves into the world of technology. It influences us in many incredible and terrible ways and this exhibition shows our obsession and curiosity with how we can make it work for us.

The two bodies of work I’ve shown are things created at Mix It Print, Somerville, MA, last year and a more recent series of drawings. More or less, a grouping and/or overlaying of sketches from life drawing and pulling influence also from anything from Medieval art to the nearly intelligible scribbles of tar that seal cracks in our failing infrastructure. Zoárd’s work also takes influence and inspiration from humanity’s insistence of collecting, curating, preserving anything and everything we’ve touched. The monuments and tombs all serve as pivot points with which we’ve created our histories. Leave some parts out, divert focus, frame.

Zoárd Wells Tyeklár studied printmaking at Massachusetts College of Art and got his BFA in 2005. As well as etch-ing, he is also a relief artist, recently completing a massive woodcut as part of Lyell Casonguay’s Big Ink project. Zoárd is also a silkscreen artist not only creating flyers, posters for Boston Hassle (a volunteer-driven non-profit which pro-motes and runs music and art events in the Boston area) but has created several series of his own prints, books and zines. He lives in Somerville, MA, with his wife and two cats.

I'm Not Here

Letterpress print series 

This series is inspired by a poem in which I explore the ideas of love and anxiety. In an anxious state one may not recognize where they are or who they are with. Space becomes two dimensional and surroundings transform from familiar objects to abstract shapes. In spite of this disorientation, love is a beacon of certainty.Occupying your body or mind can be two distinct and mutually exclusive states of being. In these images the body and mind (two parts of a whole) are treated as similar shapes, roughly mirroring each other and disassociated. They interact but remain discrete objects in a vast empty space.In keeping with this theme of duality, the images also have a more hopeful significance. The shapes (perhaps two people) exist harmoniously together in an open and quiet, bright space. Although there’s a strong theme of opposing realities in this series, the anxiety and hopefulness in the images exist in conjunction with one another. Margaret Chiarelli is an artist from Boston, Massachusetts. She studied fine art at Smith College, focusing mainly on printmaking. After her formal training, Margaret started concentrating on abstract imagery. Often in her work, when visual themes develop, she finds an underlying concept that was perhaps guiding the work all along. Margaret currently is studying graphic design at MassArt and is a printmaker at Smudge Ink in Charlestown, a company specializing in letterpress stationery and custom work.

Matthew Monteith

The exhibition features a sequence of photographs made between 2011 - 2015. The images present students in their last semester in college in the photography department at Massachusetts College of Art. It is a critical time where they go to extreme lengths to master their voice. At this point they feel free to be a revolutionary artist capable of brazen acts of unfettered imagination,  the very process that has nurtured, challenged, guided them eventually comes to an end. Monteith’s photographs evoke the moments where students abandon their fears in order to pursue their work only they can make as they move toward this moment of graduation where their work and voice is their true degree. 

Matthew Monteith is a photographer currently living in Boston, MA. He is an Assistant Professor of Photography at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He was a Fulbright Scholar in the Czech Republic from 2001-2002, the resulting work was published as Czech Eden by Aperture in 2007.  His editorial work has appeared in many magazines, including GQ, The New York Times Magazine, Interview, W, and Dwell. He works in Boston and New York.

Andrew Hammerand

April 2nd - May 3rd

The exhibition features a sequence of photographs made between 2012-2015. Seemingly disjunctive in nature, the images present an unsympathetic view of moments from the here and now. Interrogating our social climate as we progress past our first decade of the century, these images aim to reconcile issues of infringing technologies, failed national optimism, and a collective unease and mistrust of authority.

Hammerand’s photographs give a pointed view of our façade of forward-thinking modernity in a time of highly publicized violence, state-sanctioned violations of privacy, and increased public tension. 

Andrew Hammerand is a photographic artist currently living in Boston, MA. Works of his are currently on view through May in the exhibition Watching You, Watching Me at the Open Society Foundations in New York City, and were additionally exhibited recently at the Silver Eye Center for Photography in Pittsburgh. 

Works by Hammerand were recently included in current issues of OjodePez, published out of Barcelona, Spain, and Afterimage, The Journal of Media Arts and Cultural Criticism, published out of the Visual Studies Workshop, New York.

Lily Brooks

An inscription at the National Weather Service station in New Braunfels, TX reads, “He who shall predict the weather, if he does it conscientiously and with inclination, will have no quiet life any more.” 

In Lily Brooks’ series We Have to Count the Clouds, photographs function as evidence of the ways in which we comprehend, negotiate, and mediate our relationship to weather and climate. Meteorological instruments act as an extension of our senses; within them a semblance of understanding exists. In looking closely at the marks that are made–in the prediction of weather, the tracking of meteorological data, as well as on the landscape and human body itself–the work presents the visual remnants of often invisible forces. 

Brooks was born in Massachusetts in 1981. She received a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art + Design in 2006 and an MFA from the University of Texas at Austin in 2014. Lily was the 2013 recipient of a Powers Research Fellowship. Her work has been featured in the Austin Chronicle and Cabinet magazine, and was recently exhibited at the Visual Arts Center in Austin, Texas. Lily is a Lecturer in Photography at the University of Texas.

Grow Angry Slowly (intern curated)

The photographs gathered for this exhibition represent recent works by a group of artists who have just entered the ‘real world’. This life-changing event is an overwhelming and unsettling one, and the images chosen reflect the state of continuous change that surrounds these artists daily. The unusual methods of photography employed in each photograph imply a sense of imbalance, with the subject matter revolving around an attempt to understand the world each person inhabits. Despite the fact that they were created independently, the point of view is the same - these images stem from the angst that occurs naturally as humans grow out of their youth and into the demanding adult world. While the images range from forces of nature, to everyday life and personal identity, to fantastical characters in an alternate universe, each photograph was created in an effort to help the artist comprehend humanity.

Joe Leavenworth
October 2nd - November 2nd

Joe Leavenworth’s Native Son is an evolving collection of photographs meandering the American South as Joe mines his estranged biological relationship to Georgia. Adopted at birth in Decatur, GA 1985, Joe was raised in Woodbury, Connecticut and in 2009 he made his first independent drive back to Georgia. Propelled by the words of his biological mother and openness to chance encounter, Joe’s incidental observations offer disjointed impressions of a place and people in which he imagines and seeks a sense of belonging.

Joe Leavenworth is an artist living and working in New York City. Born during 1985 in Decatur, Georgia, Joe was raised in Woodbury, Connecticut and received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Photography from the Maryland Institute College of Art in 2007. Joe’s first monograph Native Son was published in January 2014 by VUU in a first edition of 150 and has sold out. A second edition will be available December 2014. Native Son was recently featured in Oxford American Magazine, Mossless Magazine’s Issue 3: The United States (2003-2013) and Ain’t Bad Magazine’s Issue No. 8: The American South. In conjunction with Ain’t Bad, several Native Son photographs are currently on view at the Morris Museum, August, GA; Oglethorpe Gallery, Savannah GA; and The Atlanta Celebrates Photography Festival, Atlanta, GA. Joe has taught photography at the Maryland Institute College of Art, Cooper Union School of Art and International Center of Photography. His work belongs to numerous collections home and abroad.

Dan Boardman is an artist living and working in Gloucester, Massachusetts. Dan’s photographs draw from a panoply of influences from Richard Feynman to Flannery O'Connor. In 2012 Dan received his MFA from Massachusetts College of Art and Design. He has taught at Harvard University, Boston University, and Massachusetts College of Art and Design. In 2013 he was awarded a Mass Cultural Council Grant for photography. Recently his work was exhibited at The Carpenter Center at Harvard University and The Mills Gallery at The Boston Center for the Arts,. In addition to his own photography practice Dan runs a small artist books collective called Houseboat Press.

Dylan was born in Connecticut and raised in Minnesota by a Scottish hairdresser and a painter from southern New Jersey. He attended college in rural Minnesota where he studied photography and graduated with distinction in his field. In 2010 he was a fellow with the Bau Institute in Otranto, Italy and a resident of the St. Olaf College art apprenticeship program. In 2014 he completed graduate studies at Massachusetts College of Art, in Boston, Massachusetts. He has shown work regularly in both Minnesota and Massachusetts. Dylan currently lives and works in New York City.

Yola Monakhov

Capture Fields is a combination of two larger projects:

In Post-Photography, pinhole cameras are sent via post and courier to create exposures of a parcel transit, beneath the ceilings of sorting facilities, inside delivery trucks, and along neighborhood carriers’ rounds. Like surveillance drones or stories in their retelling, these operator–less cameras take independent journeys, and produce images with a formal vocabulary inherent in the camera’s optics, and the chemical life of light–sensitive materials. This work is featured in the June 2014 issue of Harper’s Magazine.

In Field Guide to Bird Songs, living birds in the field are closely examined while exploring the connection between seeing, knowing, and wanting. In detailed, hyper–real photographs that recall the decorative drawings of natural history, the work evokes the delicate experience of holding a bird, against traditions of landscape representation in religious iconography, Renaissance frescoes and tapestries, and Modernist painting and sculpture.  Through collaborations with scientists, ecologists, and naturalists on the Massachusetts coast, and at universities and research centers across the Northeast and in Costa Rica, the photographer gained access to wild birds captured for banding, before their release, and those captive in labs.

Yola Monakhov was born in Moscow, Russia. She completed her MFA at Columbia University in 2007 and her MA in Italian Literature in 1998. She has been a photographer for The New Yorker magazine since 2006 and received a Meredith S. Moody award from Yaddo as well as a Macina di San Cresci Fellowship from Greve in Chianti. She is currently a faculty member at Columbia University, Pace University, International Center of Photography, and LaGuardia Community College.

Chelsea Teta

Opening Reception: June 5th, 2014

The Animals Knew Before I Did is a solo exhibition by Chelsea Teta which brings together the fields of printmaking, painting and drawing. The works on view borrow from a background in printmaking but interject components of painting and drawing to create mixed media works. These works create narratives that explore the relationships between the body and landscape, memory and self, and history and material. Memories are interpreted as sweeping blankets of color. They are deliberately placed on canvas and paper to create a complex and unsettling dynamic between subject matter and color. This dichotomy is reminiscent of how our minds choose moments of recollection, how we recall certain things and suppress others as a means of emotional survival. Not being able to remember a lot of things from childhood enables the construction of memories on paper through the oral stories of my parents

The works are all very much process oriented, referencing a background in printmaking, but excludes the permanency (that of which a print holds). The works on view are not prints per say, but the process is very much related to the multilayered process of printmaking. Using different mediums, the same intimacy within the paper is achieved and explored. For many of the works, one mark will not make sense until the next piece is created, and the mark is created again. This repetition creates a new visual language, one with its own rhythm that coincides with the color fields to make an accessible dialogue amongst viewers.

The process of printmaking has a permanency and history which is beautiful. Interested in maintaining this “history” in the paper, a visual language was created that allows works to be constantly altered. This ability to change lends to the nebulous nature of memory, constantly fluctuating and morphing. The inability to recall memories is frustrating and many times does not connect in a coherent way until later. So in many ways, the animals, my animals, knew before I did.

Ryan Arthurs

Opening Reception: May 1st, 2104

Degrees of Freedom is comprised of portraits of men, largely off-duty military servicemen, that have been colorfully silk screened, obscuring and highlighting the figures. Whereas earlier work used the natural world to explore themes of strength and toughness, Arthurs' current work uses vintage military snapshots to explore bonds of friendship, playfulness and vulnerability.

This work is part of a larger series called R&R (Rest & Relaxation), which explores how men in the military spent their freedom while not fighting on the front lines. It highlights themes related to masculine identity, literally exploring the boundaries and spaces where men go to assert their strength and prove themselves.

Ryan Arthurs received an MFA in Photography from Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2012 and a BFA in Studio Art from Carleton College in 2005. He currently teaches photography at Harvard University. Recent exhibitions include UMaine Museum I-95 Triennial, Boston University's Boston Young Contemporaries 2012 and Emerson College's Huret & Spector Gallery. Ryan published his first book, The Height of Land, in 2012 with Houseboat Press in Somerville, MA.

Group exhibition of new works by ten Massachusetts-based artists Zachary Allen, Elaine Bezold, Sean Folkes, Tony Luong, Christopher Ridgway, Joseph Saphire, Cris Schayer, Jonathan Stockton, Joyce Taihei, and Robert Warren have worked collectively to create an exhibition that that explores issues surrounding Boston’s uncertain future.

Harbinger is a reaction to a recent report released by the Boston Harbor
Association predicting sea levels could rise as much as 7½ feet in the next
century, threatening vast stretches of the city. Through photographs, sculptures, performances and installation, the artists aim to create a document of the present, and suggest ways of preparing and dealing with the future ahead. The work is both playful and deadly serious, and hopes to get viewers asking questions about their place in the new, more volatile world. The exhibition is also the beginning of an archive and invitation for others to participate in documenting the city and chronicling the efforts to confront this inevitable change.

Expanding beyond the traditional art school still life and figure study, From Life brings together a wide array of artwork drawn or painted from direct observation. From the humble napkin doodle to the polished oil painting, artists with a range of styles and backgrounds consider the people, places, and things around them.

For many of the artists in the show, working from observation is business as usual. For others, it is a practice that exists outside of their primary mode of creation. In any case, the work here demonstrates the artist’s relationship to the immediate world. Whether scrawled in an instant or carefully realized through close inspection, moments are seen, considered, and preserved.

Aviary Gallery was pleased to have: Selections From Carousel, a group show organized and curated by Lindsay Metivier and Suzi Grossman. Carousel IV, a digitally projected slideshow of photographic works, took place on July 18, 2013. The slideshow is a format that brings many people together and gives photographers a way to show new work in a unique environment without many of the logistic hurdles normally associated with juried exhibitions. As an extension of the earlier Carousel event, the gallery is presenting a curated selection of the works included in July’s slideshow in a month-long gallery exhibition. In taking works from the screen and giving them a physical form it offers the images the opportunity for a slower read and gives viewers a more physical experience.

As before, one of the goals of the Carousel exhibition is to provide a litmus test for what is currently happening and being created in today’s art world. By favoring inclusivity we hope to emphasize the variety and also the quality of work being made and the multivalence of artistic inquiry. Selections from Carousel brings together a diverse and talented group of photographers, both local and international, to form an exciting survey of contemporary photography.

Scott Alario & Harry Gould Harvey IV

Boston, MA. Aviary Gallery was pleased to present Star/Fruit, a two person collaborative exhibition of new photographic work by Harry Gould Harvey IV and Scott Alario.

Recently married, Harvey self-published the book Canadian Fruit, a collection of portraits and still lives surrounding his honeymoon. The exhibition pairs work from Harvey's book with Alario's images of his own wife, Marguerite, made over the course of their ten years thus far. Interspersed, and framed similarly, the lines between the true narratives are blurred. The show sets portraits against strange still lives and other abstractions, to create a visual tension akin to that which exists within
relationships. Having no shortage of images of their better halves, the two used the collaborative show as a way to pay homage, and give thanks to their muses. And although it's an old trope in
photography's history, with countless precedents that both artists would list as inspirational, the
weaving of their two stories arrives at something fresh- and it's as simple, or perhaps as complex,
as love itself.

Scott Alario received an MFA in photography from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2013, and a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2006. He was named a 2011 emerging photographer by Art New England, and received a 2012 Fellowship Merit Award from the Rhode Island State Council of the Arts. Alario lives and works in Providence, Rhode Island.

Sarah Coyne

Great Distances is an exhibition of recent works by Sarah Coyne.  Coyne graduated from the Massachusetts College of Art and Design in 2003 with a BFA in Illustration.  She lives and works in Jamaica Plain where she is the owner of Egg-A-Go-Go, a small company offering unique stationery and apparel.  Great Distances is Sarah Coyne’s first solo show.

The exhibition brings together paintings that embody the artist’s ongoing interest in animal migration. Coyne is fascinated by the collective consciousness of groups of animals moving together, often navigating routes traveled by their ancestors.

Coyne's watercolor paintings offer varying perspectives, capturing the frenetic energy of a tight pack of galloping gazelles or the elongated paths of caribou pacing methodically across a snowy landscape.  Some focus on smaller numbers that brave vast journeys in loyal pairs, while others enumerate immense herds.  From delicate monarch butterflies to colossal humpback whales, so many are compelled to travel so far for their very survival.

Each work's title highlights an aspect of the journeys taken.

 Quinn Gorbutt

Aug. 1st - Sept. 1st, 2013

The show brings together works that embody the artist’s ongoing interest in a variety of working methods including photographs, drawings and works on canvas.

The included paintings are cut pieces of culled and found utilitarian canvas: drop cloths,canvas covers, etc., that are blotted and stained with the markings of their function. As artworks, the pieces operate in a way not unlike the artist’s photographs: a bringing together of disparate parts, not intended as art, but re-presented in a way that is cohesive and surprising. The phrase ‘Near Than Far’ suggests a preference for close viewing both of, and within, the artworks. Its word play counterpoint ‘Near Then Far,’ suggests the exhibitions second function: For the last year, Quinn has been working as the gallery’s Director of Exhibitions and in the fall his functions at the gallery will wane as he leaves the Boston area to pursue graduate studies in art. The exhibition will be on view through the month of August.

Quinn holds a BFA from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, MA. In 2011 he was awarded an Ellen Battell Stoeckel Fellowship and attended the Yale Norfolk Summer School of Art in Norfolk, CT. He is currently a Master of Fine Arts candidate at the Yale School of Art in New Haven, CT.

Katie James

July 4th - July 28th, 2013

For all their detail, the paintings are deceptively simple: straightforward, well-crafted paintings of straightforward, well-crafted machines. The former statement embodies James’s ethos as an artist as well: “I sit down in front of something better made and more functional than you could possibly get today, and just try to do it justice.” And in this case, in contrast to much of the mass produced machinery marketed and sold worldwide, justice has been done. The paintings, gouache and pencil on paper, like the machines they depict, are thoughtful solutions to the problem of both function and design.

In addition to her freshman show at the gallery last year, Katie James, a 2006 graduate from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston, has also had work shown recently at Jameson & Thompson as well as at the Torrance Art Museum.

Rachel Bedet (Curator)

June 6th - June 30th, 2013

The show brings together a variety of artists who work in photography in uncommon ways.  On display are polaroids, tintypes on metal and glass, pinhole camera images, transparent images on glass canned in jars, albumen prints, palladium prints on vellum, images printed on the inside of eggs, and wet collodion photograms.  All these mediums and methods are considered alternative because they are not the current commercial standard for photographic work.

Alternative processes are often labeled historical, but rather than being a showcase of old processes being used contemporaneously, the show emphasizes how the divergent processes inform a viewer’s experience of the object on the wall.

The curator states, “not being in complete control of the picture taking or printing fosters a productive conversation between the artist and his/her materials and process; creation tends to occur in that exchange".  Work is discovered a posteriori -- as the result of creative inquiry.

The works, because they are often the result of a great deal of experimentation, bear the traces of their making.  Pinhole cameras have no view finder, some color emulsions have unpredictable outcomes, and printing processes like wet collodion create one-of-a-kind objects as every attempt yields a unique printing surface featuring ghostly streaks and drips.

Alternative process photographic artists working off the beaten path find themselves in a world of unusual creative possibilities.  Though the standards for what constitutes a good photographic print remain unchanged, the questions of how the image is captured, how the image is printed and on what are up to the individual artist to answer.

Mike Dacey

May 2nd - June 2nd, 2013

As an artist, Mike Dacey has worked in sight-specific installation, building amorphous structures, which straddle the boundaries between geometric abstraction and functional architecture: a mélange of wooden triangles that grow in and around gallery architecture and invite visitors to both see and experience the work. Professionally, Dacey owns and operates Repeat Press, a contemporary commercial letterpress studio in Somerville,

Massachusetts, designing and making prints, posters, cards and books, among other things, for a wide variety of clients.

The works in CIRCLES, Mike Dacey’s first one-person show at the gallery, are all unique works on paper that marry the intuitive, modular organization of his earlier installations with the exactitude of the letterpress. The jumbles of geometry, all uniformly circumscribed and placed within a larger frame, become objects that reconcile ideas in his past installations with the processes of his current commercial pursuits. The artist makes the works by “inking the whole [printing] plate, selectively removing areas of ink and then printing the sheet.” That process is repeated several times per piece causing a gradual build up of pigment density, creating tonal shifts across the paper’s fractured surface. As much a product of process as design, the printed pieces are both tactile and mechanical, “a way to go outside the usual boundaries of [his] everyday printing for clients.”

Mike Dacey has had previous solo shows at the Washington Street Art Center in Somerville, MA and Courduroy Gallery in Portland, ME.  A 2004 graduate of Hampshire College, he currently lives and works in Somerville, MA.

Nathan Zeidman

April 4th - 28th, 2013

In his paintings Zeidman takes on the familiar: non-descript interiors, unremarkable household items and the suburbs that contain them. The paintings are quiet and physical in an era where most experiences are neither. Fellow artist and colleague Lex Brownhas written:

"[Nathan] paints extremely beautiful and intimate scenes of suburbia that recall the tenderness, melancholy, and premature stoicism of adolescence. When I look at his work, I feel connected to my childhood and teenage years growing up in northern

Virginia, around architecture and landscapes similar to that of Zeidman’s New Jersey, marked by the same nondescript mid-Atlantic shrubbery and ranch style homes. It’s a ubiquitous east-of-the-Mississippi look, but for me feels very particular to the small space of country between New Jersey and Virginia."

Moreover, his work rouses in me a very distinct feeling of sustained desire – of potentiality – to leave that landscape of aluminum-sided split levels, neocolonial mini mansions, and strip malls, and seek a place with a real sense of place. Where I’m from

is charming, and beautiful, and it does have a personality but it has no character.

Whereas, I find his paintings charming, beautiful, and full of character, but quietly; they are full of that patient and sad and hopeful energy of potentiality. When I look at these paintings, I see the beauty in a place that can create that yearning, and it makes me feel like I am from somewhere.

Nathan Zeidman was born in Camden, NJ in 1990. In 2011 he attended the Yale Norfolk Summer of Art in Norfolk, CT and in 2012 was awarded a BFA from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University in Philadelphia where he currently lives and works.

'All Black Everything' is a solo exhibition of new works by Brian Willmont. A native of Boston, this is Brian’s first solo show back in the area since 2007.

Moments of restraint and intention are balanced with accident, which activates loose poetic association through investigations with gouache, bic pen, enamel, marbling, folding, sanding and pouring inks.  Willmont creates combinations of symbologies, with geometric abstractions and organic images that are tranquil, yet chaotic, balancing a meditative calm with the overstimulation of the modern world.

From Boston MA, Brian Willmont received his BFA with honors from the Massachusetts College of Art in 2007. Interested in the world around us as well as the world within, working on paper, sculpture and installation, he explores the relationship between the object and the beholder, where art practice becomes idolatry.  Willmont has had solo and two person shows at Receiver Gallery and Park Life in San Francisco, Space 1026 in Philadelphia, and LaMontagne Gallery, The Rhys Gallery and the Boston Center for the Arts in Boston. His work has been written about in Juxtapoz Magazine, The Boston Globe, Beautiful/Decay, Hardcore Magazine, The Santa Fe Reporter, The Boston Phoenix, amongst others. In 2005 Brian started Apenest, an experimental group devoted to book and print publishing.  Brian lives and works in Brooklyn NY.

My own practice as an artist is almost always a heuristic enterprise and it remains so in curating an exhibition: can the disparate be brought together to form a whole, somehow different or greater than the constituent parts? While this is a thematic exhibition, it might only be so in name. The artists and works on display encompass a breadth of artistic concerns tethered under the guise of a common subject and the connection of a common acquaintance.

Rather than putting on a show about towels, what I’ve hoped to do is look broadly at the idea of subject matter and how a subject influences (or doesn’t influence) a work’s ability to generate meaning. While the nominal subject of each piece is a towel of one or another kind, the way each work uses its subject to illicit a response from the viewer varies widely and foregrounds the potential polysemy of subjects in artworks.

James Weinberg (curator)

Pattern Recognition is an exhibition curated by James Weinberg comprised of works that mingle strategies and forms borrowed from hard-edged geometric patterning and more expressly organic ways of suggesting and subverting order. The decidedly eclectic grouping of works and artists prefers not a single or privileged methodology but asks the viewer to consider a myriad of ways in which experience can be translated into visual media. The emphasis on pattern suggests the all too familiar impulse to see shapes in clouds and to search for stable meaning where there might be none; they exhibit symptoms of straightforward logic but unruly sediments of personal, fluid intuition slow their reading down. In a surprising way, the artworks and exhibition mirror life itself: a mix of patterns and repetition that are at times indecipherable and confusing but just as often elicit familiarity and comfort.

Mark Symczak

Aug. 2nd - Sept. 2nd, 2012

Birds is an exhibition of mixed media works by Mark Symczak. The subject of each piece, as the exhibition title reflects, is a fowl of one or another kind, but portrayed in a way that, while steeped in an emergent Folk Art sensibility, remains reflective of a style native to Symczak’s existing canon of works. The artist undertook these pieces as an experiment in abstract collage by revisiting an archive of monoprints that had amassed in his studio. In the process of cutting and composing, what resulted was neither exclusively abstract nor exclusively representational. Instead, axiomatic depictions of birds emerged, each enveloped by surprising splashes of painterly abstraction. While they are an embodiment of complexity and variety, the works also maintain a refreshing accessibility and demonstrate the artist’s sensitivity for coaxing out of disorder, something subtle, meditative and beautiful.

Make Happen Faster is an exhibition that brings together artists Cody Hoyt (NYC), Sri Whipple (Salt Lake City) and Fionn McCabe (LA). While all three have distinct individual styles, they share similar influences and visual sensibilities. Each artist takes a common visual element, be it lettering, the human figure, or a Saturday morning cartoon and breaks it down to varying degrees of abstraction: a letter becomes line, an arm a curve, a high heel an arrow, leading into a surreal landscape that is at once strange and familiar.

Photography, as history has demonstrated, often falls short of its intended function of transparent communication and instead underscores the gaps between our own perceptions and the way a camera can uniquely cut and flatten space. The two artists represented here have embraced this dimensional transliteration to hint at ideas that sit well
outside of photography’s frame. The images toe a tenuous line between incalculable vastness and invisible minutia, yet remain within sight of a recognizable reality. In the process of being suspended between endless moments or transported into a vision of space, we end up always back where we began, with both feet firmly on the ground, better prepared to reconsider our own immediate surroundings and our relationship to them.

Robin Myers was born and raised in Houston, Texas. She graduated from MassArt in 2012 with a BFA in Photography where she has received many awards, including a 2008 and 2010 National Endowment for the Arts Award and the Kirsten Malone Scholarship. Katharine Shields (b. 1984, New Hampshire) is a photographer who lives in Boston, MA. Her work has been exhibited at The Photographic Resource Center in Boston, MA, Aviary Gallery in Jamaica Plain, MA, and Powderhouse in Somerville, MA. She graduated from MassArt in 2012 with a BFA in photography.

Many of my still photographs are taken during travels, for music or otherwise. I am drawn toward combinations of natural and artificial light, and often find images at sunset or magic hour -- a good time of day for a touring musician to steal away time for other work, since it tends to fall between soundcheck and showtime! Reflections also often interest me -- maybe again because of the mix of light that they bring to a single perspective.

The videos, by contrast, have been filmed here in New England. I feel they are an extension of my still photography, combined with my interest in music -- but also with my interest in collaboration. Music is something I have always played with others, while photography is something I have always done on my own. Video is a happy mix for me of these two pleasures.

The title of the show, Afterimage, is also the title of a book that my partner Damon Krukowski and I have put together. The text is by Damon, and like the photographs in this show (some of which also appear in the book), it touches on our travels -- mixed with his concerns about memory, both social and personal, and family history. The book is published by Ugly Duckling Presse, Brooklyn, and will be released to coincide with this show.

Brutal Pyramid is an exhibition of work exploring various aspects of animal behavior as well as a light survey of the modes in which individuals continue to depict them. It has perhaps been the longest-running and most popular deliberate form of visual subject matter on earth. Cultures from around the globe empathize with, exploit, and (literally) idolize certain members of the animal kingdom – even in pre-history, as we shared the same fight for survival, an animal could represent and conduit for the soul or a gift from the gods. Put plainly, we are deeply engaged with the enigmatic and human-like behaviors of creatures on the whole.

Each artist involved in the exhibition has approached the subject in his or her own unique way. In utilizing an array of animal forms, the artist’s have made efforts to convey otherwise ineffable thoughts and issues much like their artistic ancestors.

I gather color in order to document it and preserve it so that the memory is not forgotten. Kristin Texeira is a recent painting graduate of Massachusetts College of Art and Design. She has since been painting Florence, San Francisco, and along the East coast in order to expand her color palate.

Danielle Spurge is the (insert all positions here) at The Merriweather Council. She enjoys stitching and laughing and frolicking through the fields singing quite loudly not unlike Maria in the Sound of Music.  She is 23 years old, living, crafting, frolicking and blogging in Boston, Massachusetts. She has one of those fancy BFA degrees from a little place called Massachusetts College of Art and Design in a significantly under appreciated major; Fibers.  Danielle began doing her Wishbone stitch embroideries during her senior year in college when she was slacking off big time on her studio work and needed to start doing something creative. She became quite infatuated with the tiny stitches and used them as a way to document memories and moments. The rest is history.
